SusFA - Getting Listed

How Much Does it Cost?

All entries are free but the main drawback is time and there has to be priorities. Whilst short entries can be added quickly, a webpage does take time and will be at the bottom of the queue. (It should be noted that Interfolk has already provided several groups with web-pages before embarking on the SusFA project, so the existing pages pre-date the directory and have been fitted into it).

Having said that, SusFA is not averse to accepting donations. Unlike many organisations, SusFA has never charged specific fees.(Whether you donate or not, makes no difference if you are donating your time to the folk community, that's good enough).

Who Do We List?

The aim of the directory is to allow people to quickly see what groups/classes are available in their area. Sussex is divided up so that most if not all the groups in an area will appear on the screen without having to scroll. By clicking on the name, the user is taken to a more detailed description of that group. The description will provide a link to the website of the group if they have one. To accommodate all the groups the current 3 line summary may be reduced in size and/or an area may be split up to generate new pages. The section on Bands and Callers operates in the same way except it is assumed that they are Sussex wide. Their entries will detail their range.

Each area has three sections – Folk Clubs, Other Clubs and local links. This tries to resolve the problem of who to include. The website has been set up to assist the ordinary people who voluntarily run groups and classes to achieve visibility in the counties. It is not set up to promote purely commercial organisations. There are many people that fall somewhere in between the two. Local bands could be regarded as commercial since they are available for hire, pubs often host folk song clubs because of the additional revenue and so on. However these latter are definitely part of the community folk dance scene whilst, say, an Arts Council funded tour is not.

A clear cut-off point is to be found with folk song/music clubs. If the club offers floor spots, giving ordinary people the opportunity to perform in public, then, even though it may be run by a landlord with an eye to shifting x barrels of ale, we will list it as a folk club. If the club is a venue only for paid performances, we won't - we may list it under other clubs.

The initial decision on what to list will be at the discretion of the webmaster. All requests (whether accepted or not) will be passed on to the SusFA Committee for a final decision. Eventually a policy will be put in place to clarify our criteria.

Events

The events section is not yet fully set up and will take some time for everyone to learn the ropes. The aim is that the Sussex wide events diary and What's On sections in each area will hold a simple 1 line description of the event. Clicking on these will lead to a full description. If you can. please download and use the template as it will save me a lot of time.

I've invented a few rules for the moment as I have to get everything going. With experience these will be relaxed or tightened.

MORRIS MEN - We won't list all your appearances but will point to your website or put a list in your Club SusFA entry. Logically it would be good to have a calendar showing where and when you can see all the Morris groups but this can wait til later.

FOLK SONG CLUBS - If you have regular guests (ie every other week) which includes floor spots then just use the simple 1 line entry. Unless things get too much, these will appear in your areas What's On Section. You should appear as a regular entry 'with guest nights' anyway (let me know if you don't). Check that your clubs entry points to your website if you have one, otherwise we can put your guest list up in your Club SusFA entry. However if you do have something which is truly a special event, go ahead and use the second one as well. [Note: I won't be able to cope if every week is a special event for every club!].

The initial decision on what to list will be at the discretion of the webmaster (who is likely to change his mind with experience!). All requests (whether accepted or not) will be passed on to the SusFA Committee for a final decision. Eventually a policy will be put in place to clarify our criteria.

News

This covers aspects such as change of location, stop press announcements on events and anything that may be of interest. Again its not yet available but watch this space. The initial decision on what to list will be at the discretion of the web master. All requests (whether accepted or not) will be passed on to the SusFA Committee for a final decision. Eventually a policy will be put in place to clarify our criteria.

Other Clubs

These are groups that share the same traditional ethos who are not quite folk – bell-ringers for example – which need the same sort of visibility or dance which is not quite folk. The initial decision on what to list will be at the discretion of the web master. All requests (whether accepted or not) will be passed on to the SusFA Committee for a final decision. Eventually a policy will be put in place to clarify our criteria.

Local Links

Local links are specifically for local community sites which may be of use or interest to folk groups (e.g. Church halls) or associated with community dance. The initial decision on what to list will be at the discretion of the webmaster. All requests (whether accepted or not) will be passed on to the SusFA Committee for a final decision. Eventually a policy will be put in place to clarify our criteria.

We are recommending the Open Directory Project as the best place to seek a link to promote local businesses. Thus we link to appropriate sections of this directory so that if our users actually do need to find a commercial service they will be pointed in the right direction. Hence we do not need to provide links to local estate agents, insurance salesmen and the like.
